How to choose power equipment
Match the machine to the surface, the load and the job site. This department covers walk-behind snow blowers from Ariens, Cub Cadet, Husqvarna and Toro; Yamaha generators, water pumps and a pressure washer; and compact excavators with hydraulic breaker attachments. The questions below decide most purchases.
Single-stage, two-stage or three-stage snow blower
Start with what you clear. Single-stage machines clear down to the pavement, and their auger paddles contact the ground, so Toro advises they should not be used on unpaved surfaces. They fit paved driveways and sidewalks. Two-stage machines let you adjust the height of the auger housing, so they work on concrete, asphalt or gravel. Cub Cadet's three-stage models add an accelerator between the auger and the impeller that lets you clear snow faster.
Clearing width, drive and features
The width in inches appears in most model names (21, 24, 28 or 30 inch, for example) and sets how many passes a driveway takes. Engine size in cc is listed alongside it. Track-drive models, such as Ariens RapidTrak and the Husqvarna and Cub Cadet track units, are built for traction; Cub Cadet calls track drive ideal for uneven slopes or terrain. Electric start, hydrostatic drive, power steering and EFI engines are conveniences worth comparing listing by listing. Toro's 60V battery single-stage models need no gasoline or engine oil at all.
Generators
Add up the running watts of everything you will power at the same time, then compare that with each generator's continuous rating rather than its peak figure. For electronics, look at inverter models: Yamaha describes the EF4500iSE as safe to use with sensitive equipment, and its engine shuts off if a high level of carbon monoxide is detected. Wherever you use one, the Consumer Product Safety Commission says to operate portable generators outside only, at least 20 feet from the house, with the exhaust directed away from the home, and never inside a home or garage even with doors and windows open.
Water pumps and trash pumps
Pick the pump by what is in the water. A trash pump is built for dirty water: Yamaha engineered the YP20T for dewatering with solids up to 20 mm (0.78 inch) in diameter. The YP20G and YP30G here are listed as water pumps rather than trash pumps, so check the solids rating in each listing before using one in dirty water. The SP20ET is an electric submersible trash pump, which sits in the water rather than drawing it up a suction hose.
Mini excavators and hydraulic breakers
Each excavator listing gives operating weight, maximum digging depth and the engine, which ranges from Kubota diesels to Honda, Briggs & Stratton Vanguard and Loncin gas engines. Before adding a breaker, compare the working pressure and flow range printed in the breaker listing with the auxiliary hydraulic output in your excavator's manual, and confirm the mount fits your machine.
Machines are inspected and documented before shipping palletized on LTL freight within the continental US; see shipping. Engine-driven welder/generators are in welding equipment.
Ordering power equipment
- How are these units inspected before shipping?
- Every unit is inspected and documented before it is palletized. Engines and motors receive a compression check where the design allows, and the recorded condition notes ship with the unit.
- What does freight cost and how long does delivery take?
- Insured European road freight starts at €89.00 for standard units and €149.00 above €2,000.00, priced by delivery zone across the UK and Continental Europe. Handling is 1–2 business days. Transit is typically 1 to 6 business days (1–3 business days UK, 3–6 business days Continental Europe). Depending on your exact location and carrier route it can take up to 10 business days. See our freight shipping policy.
- Can I return a unit if it is not right?
- Yes, within 30 days of delivery under our refund and return policy. Remorse returns carry a 15% restocking fee and return freight; defective or damaged units are covered by us.
- Can I use a single-stage snow blower on a gravel driveway?
- No, a single-stage snow blower is meant for paved surfaces. Its auger paddles contact the ground and it clears down to the pavement, which is why Toro says single-stage machines should not be used on unpaved surfaces. On gravel, use a two-stage or three-stage machine, whose auger housing height can be adjusted to stay above the stones.
- Is a three-stage snow blower worth it over a two-stage?
- A three-stage snow blower makes sense if you regularly clear deep or heavy snow and want fewer passes. Cub Cadet adds an accelerator between the auger and the impeller that lets the machine clear snow faster. For moderate snowfall on an average driveway, a two-stage machine with the right clearing width is usually enough.
- Where is it safe to run a portable generator?
- Run it outdoors only, at least 20 feet from the house, with the exhaust pointed away from windows, doors and vents. The Consumer Product Safety Commission warns never to use a generator inside a home, garage, basement, crawlspace or shed, even with doors open, and recommends battery-backed carbon monoxide alarms on every level of the home.
- What is the difference between a trash pump and a water pump?
- A trash pump is built to pass solids, so it is the one to use when the water carries sand, gravel or debris. Yamaha engineered its YP20T trash pump for dewatering work with solid content up to 20 mm in diameter. Before buying any pump for dirty water, compare the solids rating in the listing with what you expect to pump.
- Will a hydraulic breaker fit my mini excavator?
- It will only work well if your excavator supplies the pressure and flow the breaker is rated for and the mount matches. Each breaker listing here states its working pressure and flow range. Compare those figures with the auxiliary hydraulic specification in your excavator manual and check the machine weight class before ordering.
