Choosing a Yamaha outboard

Yamaha's four-stroke range runs from small portables to the 5.6-liter V8 XTO Offshore, and several of its families are built around one job: kicker and pontoon work, shallow rivers, tournament fishing or offshore running. Decide which job you need done before comparing horsepower.

Portables, High Thrust and Jet Drive

The F9.9 and F8 portables both weigh under 90 pounds, and Shallow Water Drive is standard on their tiller models to help keep the lower unit out of harm's way in skinny water. For pushing weight, the High Thrust line (60, 50, 25 and 9.9 hp, T prefix) is rated at up to 60 percent more forward thrust and 70 percent more reverse thrust than standard Yamahas of the same horsepower; Yamaha positions the T9.9, which offers a 25-inch shaft, as a kicker for flats and multi-species boats. Jet Drive models are rated at the pump: the F150 Jet produces 105 hp there and the F115 Jet 80 hp, so compare jets by pump output.

V MAX SHO

V MAX SHO models carry a VF prefix and are Yamaha's performance family, aimed squarely at tournament bass boats. The current V6 versions add 40 percent more charging power than earlier designs, which helps on boats with heavy electrical loads, and they remain compatible with mechanical controls.

Offshore V6 and XTO V8

The XTO Offshore was developed for large offshore boats. Yamaha says it was the first four-stroke outboard to use direct injection, and its integrated electric steering removes the need for cables or hydraulic lines. Counter-rotation versions carry an extra L in the model name, as with the FL425A. The XTO works with Yamaha's Helm Master EX joystick system, so a used one needs matching helm components and harnesses.

What to check

Read the whole model code for shaft and rotation, ask which control and gauge system the motor was rigged with, and confirm wide-open-throttle rpm on your boat once it is propped. For a kicker, measure the transom where the kicker will mount, not at the center.

Yamaha outboard motors: common questions

What does High Thrust mean on a Yamaha outboard?
High Thrust models use a larger lower unit and higher gear ratio to push heavy loads at low speed. Yamaha rates them at up to 60 percent more forward thrust and up to 70 percent more reverse thrust than standard outboards of the same horsepower, and markets them for sailboats, heavy pontoons and kicker duty. They are offered in 60, 50, 25 and 9.9 hp, and the model name starts with T.
Why is a Yamaha jet outboard rated lower than the engine it is based on?
Because Yamaha quotes jet output at the pump, after the jet unit takes its share. The F150 Jet Drive, for example, produces 105 hp at the pump, and the F115 Jet produces 80 hp. When you compare jets or plan a repower, use the pump figure. The trade-off buys shallow-water access, since nothing extends below the hull to strike rocks.
Who is the Yamaha V MAX SHO built for?
V MAX SHO is Yamaha's performance family, aimed mainly at tournament bass anglers who want a fast hole shot and top speed. The V6 models now offer 40 percent more charging power than earlier designs, which helps keep batteries up on boats with heavy electronics. They work with mechanical controls, so they can suit boats already rigged with cables.
What sets the Yamaha XTO Offshore apart?
The XTO is a 5.6-liter V8 built for large offshore boats. Yamaha says it introduced direct injection to four-stroke outboards and added an integrated electric steering system that eliminates cables and hydraulic lines. It comes in 25, 30 and 35-inch shafts and works with Helm Master EX joystick control, so check the rigging that comes with a used unit.
