Buying an Evinrude outboard
An Evinrude is now a pre-owned or leftover-stock purchase: on May 27, 2020, BRP announced it was discontinuing production of Evinrude E-TEC and E-TEC G2 outboards. BRP says it continues to support Evinrude and Johnson owners with genuine parts, oils and a network of authorized dealers, so these motors remain serviceable. The questions that matter most are which generation you are looking at, how it is oiled and what controls it needs.
E-TEC and E-TEC G2
E-TEC motors are two-strokes that run on Evinrude's XD-series two-stroke oils; the later E-TEC G2 generation covers larger V6 models, with operator's guides listed from 150 to 300 hp. Confirm the exact model and generation, since manuals, parts and rigging are model-specific, and ask for the controls, gauges and harness if they came off the same boat. Evinrude also sold smaller four-stroke models, which follow the oil specification in their own operator's guide.
Oil: the most important check
E-TEC two-strokes are designed for Evinrude XD100, XD50 or XD30 oil, with XD100 preferred, and Evinrude's FAQ allows any TC-W3 rated oil on its two-strokes. The catch is reprogramming: a dealer can set an E-TEC's engine management module to run on XD100 alone at a reduced oil rate. If a motor has been set up that way, it must stay on XD100 or go back to a dealer to be reprogrammed before you switch oils, and BRP also requires XD100 below 32°F. Ask the seller which oil the motor has been run on and whether it was reprogrammed.
Manuals and support
Evinrude publishes digital operator's guides, and authorized Evinrude dealers remain the first stop for technical questions and service. Before buying, check that a dealer near you still works on Evinrudes, and use the operator's guide to confirm the service intervals the motor should have had.
Evinrude outboard motors: common questions
- Can I still get parts for an Evinrude outboard?
- Yes. When BRP ended Evinrude outboard production in 2020, it said it would continue supplying service parts to customers and its dealer network, and Evinrude's owner pages still list genuine OEM parts, oils and a network of authorized dealers for maintenance and repair. Availability of individual parts can vary, so ask a dealer about the specific model before you buy.
- What oil does an Evinrude E-TEC use?
- Evinrude recommends its own XD100, XD50 or XD30 oil for E-TEC outboards, with XD100 preferred, and its owner FAQ also accepts any TC-W3 rated oil for its two-strokes. There is one important exception: if the engine has been reprogrammed to use a leaner amount of oil, it must use XD100 only. Below 32 degrees F, XD100 is required regardless.
- What does it mean if an E-TEC was programmed for XD100?
- It means a dealer set the engine management module to run on XD100 exclusively, which reduces oil consumption. Once programmed, Evinrude says not to use any other oil except a one-time emergency fill of an NMMA TC-W3 oil, and to have a dealer reprogram it to the factory setting before switching. Ask the seller, or have a dealer read the setting.
- Is it still sensible to buy an Evinrude now that production has ended?
- It can be, if the motor checks out and you have service access. BRP says it still supplies parts, oils and dealer support. Before buying, confirm a dealer near you works on Evinrudes, verify the generation and oil setup, and make sure the controls and gauges the motor needs are available.
