How to choose chassis, suspension and restoration parts
Fitment comes first: confirm year, make, model, body style and side before anything else. Most of this department serves classic American cars and trucks, with reproduction sheet metal, bolt-in and weld-in suspension systems, wheels and tires, interior kits, consoles, seats, steering wheels and gauges. Many titles read like "1967-74 GM A-Body" or "1969-70 Nova w/o AC", and those qualifiers matter.
Read the fitment line closely
Platform codes such as GM A-, F- and X-body or Mopar A-, B- and E-body group cars that share structure, but a part can still be specific to a coupe or convertible, a two-door or four-door, a single model year or one trim. Body panels are sold left-hand (LH) or right-hand (RH). Interior kits and consoles often differ for cars with or without air conditioning, bucket or bench seats, and automatic or manual shifters. Upholstery, carpet and door panel kits also come in specific colors and patterns, so match your trim code or the color you are restoring to. Compare the listing against your vehicle tag or build documentation, not memory.
Reproduction sheet metal
Floor pans, trunk floors, fenders, quarter panels and door shells here come from makers including Auto Metal Direct, Dynacorn and OER. Auto Metal Direct says its parts are designed using modern tooling to replicate the factory look and feel, and ships panels coated in black EDP primer for corrosion resistance during storage and installation. Plan time for test-fitting and trimming before any panel is welded in.
Suspension: coil-over, air or OE-style
Decide how you will use the car before choosing a system. Coil-over kits generally cost less and install more easily than air suspension; RideTech notes the coil-over system requires less equipment to operate. Air ride adds the ability to raise the car over obstacles, lower it when parked, and adapt to variable loads while keeping ride height. For Mustang II-style front ends, 4-link and 4-bar rear kits, subframes and frame rail kits, check whether the kit is bolt-in or weld-in before you order, and budget for fabrication when it is weld-in.
Wheels and tires
Check three numbers on any wheel: bolt pattern, offset and center bore. Vision Wheel defines offset as the distance between the wheel's center line and its hub mounting surface, and warns that a wheel mounted without a hub-centric ring is centered mainly by the lug nuts, which can cause vibration. For tires, find the date code on the sidewall: under federal rules the last four digits give the week and year of manufacture. Michelin recommends replacing tires ten years after their date of manufacture regardless of tread, which matters on show cars that are rarely driven.
Parts are inspected and documented before shipping. See shipping, and find engine-bay parts in engine components.
Ordering auto parts & accessories
- How are these units inspected before shipping?
- Every unit is inspected and documented before it is palletized. Engines and motors receive a compression check where the design allows, and the recorded condition notes ship with the unit.
- What does freight cost and how long does delivery take?
- Insured European road freight starts at £92.92 for standard units and £155.56 above £2,088.00, priced by delivery zone across the UK and Continental Europe. Handling is 1–2 business days. Transit is typically 1 to 6 business days (1–3 business days UK, 3–6 business days Continental Europe). Depending on your exact location and carrier route it can take up to 10 business days. See our freight shipping policy.
- Can I return a unit if it is not right?
- Yes, within 30 days of delivery under our refund and return policy. Remorse returns carry a 15% restocking fee and return freight; defective or damaged units are covered by us.
- How do I know a reproduction panel will fit my car?
- Match the listing to your exact year, body style and side before ordering. Reproduction panels are built for a specific platform and often a specific coupe, convertible or model year, and left-hand and right-hand parts are not interchangeable. Plan to test-fit and trim any reproduction panel, OE-style or not, before it is welded in.
- Should I choose coil-overs or air suspension for my classic?
- Choose coil-overs for a lower cost and simpler installation, and air suspension if you want adjustable ride height. RideTech notes that coil-overs cost less, install more easily and need less equipment to operate, while air ride can raise the car over obstacles, lower it when parked and adapt to changing loads while maintaining ride height.
- How can I tell how old a set of tires is?
- Read the date code at the end of the DOT number on the sidewall. Federal regulations require a four-digit date code in which the first two digits are the week and the last two are the year of manufacture, so 2523 means the 25th week of 2023. Michelin recommends replacing tires ten years after manufacture regardless of remaining tread.
- What do I need to know before ordering aftermarket wheels?
- Confirm the bolt pattern, offset and center bore for your car, plus clearance for brakes and suspension. Offset is the distance from the wheel center line to the hub mounting surface and moves the wheel in or out. If the center bore is larger than your hub, a hub-centric ring helps prevent vibration from a wheel centered only on its lug nuts.
