Choosing a Suzuki outboard
Suzuki has built outboards since 1965, and its current four-stroke range runs from the ultra-portable 2.5 hp to the flagship DF350 V6. Suzuki four-strokes use DF model names; read the full model code on a listing and confirm shaft length, steering and rotation in the spec before you buy.
Engineering features worth knowing
- Offset driveshaft: places the powerhead farther forward and adds a first gear reduction above the gearcase, which allows a larger gear ratio and a larger-diameter propeller, and moves the outboard's center of gravity forward.
- Lean Burn Control: predicts fuel needs and runs a leaner mixture across a wide range, from low speed into cruise. Suzuki first introduced it on the DF90A, DF80A and DF70A.
- Suzuki Precision Control: Suzuki's drive-by-wire throttle and shift that replaces mechanical cables, for single, twin or triple engines and dual helm stations.
Selective Rotation on the DF300AP and DF250AP
Most twin-engine boats need one standard and one counter-rotating motor. Suzuki's DF300AP and DF250AP can run either way: connecting a switch circuit in the engine compartment and fitting a counter-rotation propeller puts the motor in counter-rotation mode, with power sent through a reverse gear redesigned to behave like a forward gear. When buying one used for a twin setup, confirm which mode it was rigged for and that the matching prop comes with it.
Buying a used Suzuki
Older Suzuki two-strokes still appear on the used market, alongside the four-stroke DF line. With a two-stroke, find out whether it runs on premix or oil injection and what oil it has been given. With a four-stroke, ask for service records showing oil, gear lube and water pump work, and for drive-by-wire models confirm the Precision Control components come with the motor or are available for your helm. Finally, ask which propeller is fitted and what full-throttle rpm the boat reaches with it.
Suzuki outboard motors: common questions
- What is Suzuki Selective Rotation?
- Selective Rotation lets one Suzuki DF300AP or DF250AP run in either standard or counter-rotation. Connecting a switch to a circuit in the engine compartment and fitting a counter-rotation propeller changes the mode, and the lower unit uses a redesigned reverse gear for counter-rotation. Suzuki says this removes the need to buy a dedicated counter-rotation outboard for a twin installation.
- What does Lean Burn do on a Suzuki outboard?
- Lean Burn Control predicts the engine's fuel needs from operating conditions and runs a leaner air-fuel mixture where it can. Suzuki says the benefit spans a wide range, from low speed into cruise. It was first introduced on the DF90A, DF80A and DF70A and is used on the DF300AP, where Suzuki reports a 14 percent cruising economy gain over the original DF300.
- What is Suzuki Precision Control?
- Suzuki Precision Control is Suzuki's drive-by-wire throttle and shift system. It replaces mechanical control cables with electronic wiring, which removes cable friction and gives smoother, more precise shifting, especially at low rpm. It supports single, twin or triple installations and dual-station helms, and includes protection against shifting damage from mishandling.
- Why do Suzuki outboards use an offset driveshaft?
- The offset driveshaft adds a first gear reduction between the crankshaft and the driveshaft, with a second reduction in the gearcase. That combination allows a larger overall gear ratio, so the motor can swing a larger-diameter propeller for thrust under load. It also places the powerhead farther forward, which moves the outboard's center of gravity forward.
