Buying a Honda JDM engine
Honda JDM engines are mostly naturally aspirated, high-revving four-cylinders built around VTEC, and the differences between versions that share a family name are large. Identify the engine code, the car it came from, and whether the gearbox and computer included with it are the matching ones.
B-series: B16A, B16B and B18C
Honda launched DOHC VTEC in the 1989 Integra, with a 1.6-liter engine making 160 hp and revving to 8,000 rpm. The B16B is the version from the EK9 Civic Type R, which Honda offered in Japan only, with a hand-ported 1.6-liter DOHC VTEC engine and a helical limited-slip differential. Listings here pair B16A and B16B engines with S4C 5-speed and limited-slip transmissions and Type R computers, and the Integra Type R 1.8-liter is listed separately. If you are building a period-correct Type R, check that the gearbox and computer match the engine version, not just the family.
K-series: K20A
The K20A is a 2.0-liter with i-VTEC, which Honda describes as VTEC combined with VTC, continuously adjusting cam phasing. Honda's second-generation Civic Type R introduced the 2.0-liter DOHC i-VTEC K-series engine to that model, and the later Japanese FD2 sedan used a more powerful K20A. The code alone does not tell you the version: this page lists Type R units and a CR-V K20A, so confirm the donor car and computer before you buy.
F20C: the S2000 engine
The F20C is the S2000's 2.0-liter. For the US model, Honda quoted 240 hp, a 9,000 rpm rev limit and VTEC on both intake and exhaust valves. Honda describes it as a longitudinally mounted engine in a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout, with a chain-driven cam drive, so it is not an alternative to a B or K swap in a front-drive Civic.
What to check
Ask for compression readings, which are taken before shipping, and look for oil leaks around the VTEC solenoid and valve cover. On a high-revving engine of unknown history, budget for timing-component service to Honda's specification for that engine, plus fresh seals. See the JDM engines guide for emissions and registration rules, or Toyota JDM engines to compare.
Honda jdm engines: common questions
- What is the difference between VTEC and i-VTEC?
- VTEC switches between cam profiles to change valve timing and lift with engine speed; Honda launched it in the 1989 Integra. i-VTEC adds VTC, which continuously adjusts camshaft phasing for performance and efficiency across a broad power band. The K20A in this department uses i-VTEC, while B-series engines such as the B16A and B16B use VTEC.
- Was the B16B ever sold in the US?
- Not in a new car. The B16B came from the EK9 Civic Type R, which Honda offered to the Japanese market only, with a hand-ported 1.6-liter DOHC VTEC engine. That is why it reaches US buyers as an imported used engine. Check that any included transmission and computer are the Type R versions if originality matters to you.
- How high does the S2000 F20C rev?
- Honda quoted a 9,000 rpm rev limit for the US S2000's 2.0-liter engine, with 240 hp at 8,300 rpm and VTEC on both intake and exhaust valves. Because it lives at high rpm, check compression, oil condition and valvetrain noise carefully, and confirm whether the listing includes the computer and harness.
- Is every K20A a Type R engine?
- No. K20A is an engine code shared by more than one version, and this department lists both Type R units and a CR-V K20A. Honda notes that the Japanese FD2 Civic Type R used a more powerful K20A, which shows the tune varies. Confirm the donor car, cylinder head and computer before buying for a specific build.
