Buying a Toyota JDM engine

Toyota JDM engines cover very different builds, from the 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six to small high-revving four-cylinders, so start by naming the exact engine code and the car it came from. This page also carries engines that are not Japanese-market performance units, such as a Camry 2.5-liter, which are straightforward replacements for the same vehicle.

2JZ-GTE twin-turbo inline-six

The 2JZ-GTE is the 3.0-liter DOHC 24-valve twin-turbo six. In Japan, Toyota fitted it to the Supra RZ and quoted 280 PS; the US Supra Turbo of the same generation was rated at 320 hp, so do not assume a Japanese-market engine and a US one are identical. Toyota added VVT-i to the US non-turbo Supra for 1998, and engines here are listed as VVT-i or non-VVT-i, so match the version to your harness and computer. On a twin-turbo engine, check both turbochargers and the plumbing between them, because a listing that includes the turbos is worth only as much as their condition.

3S-GTE turbo four

The 3S-GTE is a 2.0-liter DOHC 16-valve turbo four. Toyota used it in the second-generation MR2 GT, launched in Japan in 1989 and rated at 225 PS. Listings identify the generation, which matters for intake, turbo and computer compatibility.

4A-GE 20-valve

The 20-valve 4A-GE is the high-revving 1.6-liter twin-cam; Toyota offered a 160 PS 20-valve version in the 1991 Corolla Levin. It suits light chassis where revs matter more than torque.

Lexus 5.0-liter V8

The 5.0-liter V8 from the Lexus IS F is a different kind of swap: Lexus rated it at 416 hp, and it uses VVT-iE, an electric motor that changes intake cam phasing. That electronic valve timing is one more reason to buy it with its matching computer and wiring.

Before you buy

Ask for the compression readings taken before shipping, confirm whether the loom, computer and transmission are included, and check the oil for sludge. See the JDM engines guide for emissions and registration rules, or transmissions if you need a gearbox.

Toyota jdm engines: common questions

Why is a Japanese-market 2JZ-GTE rated lower than the US Supra Turbo?
The two ratings were published for different markets. Toyota quoted 280 PS for the twin-turbo engine in the Japanese-market Supra RZ, while the US Supra Turbo was rated at 320 hp. Do not treat the numbers as proof the engines are identical or different; compare part numbers for turbos, injectors and the engine computer.
Which car did the 3S-GTE come from?
Toyota used the 3S-GTE 2.0-liter turbo four in the second-generation MR2 GT, launched in Japan in October 1989 and rated at 225 PS. Check the generation stated on the listing, because intake, turbo and computer details differ between versions and affect what parts fit.
What should I check on a used twin-turbo 2JZ-GTE?
Check compression on all six cylinders, shaft play and oil leaks on both turbochargers, the condition of the vacuum and boost lines between them, and whether the harness and computer match the engine version. Confirm whether it is a VVT-i or non-VVT-i engine so the computer, wiring and sensors you plan to use are compatible.
Does the Lexus IS F V8 need its own computer?
Plan on it. Lexus states the IS F 5.0-liter V8 uses VVT-iE, with an electric motor altering intake cam phasing, so the engine depends on its electronic controls. Buy the engine with its matching computer and harness where possible, or budget for a stand-alone system that supports its valve timing.
