Flaming River's power rack and pinion cradle kit, part FR313NPNC, replaces the stock steering box on a 1968-72 Chevrolet Chevelle with a hydraulic power-assisted rack and pinion, using a travel-bar system that connects tubular inner tie rods to the car's original steering pivot points to reduce bump steer.
What the kit includes
- A hydraulic power-assist steel rack, natural finish, with 6.000 in. of travel, housed in an aluminum silver powdercoated cover
- Mounting brackets and hardware
A steering column and tie rod ends are not part of this kit, and neither is the power steering pump, which has to be purchased separately. Installation uses the Chevelle's factory steering mounting holes and does not require cutting or welding.
Before you order
Because a power steering pump is not included, budget for sourcing one, along with any hoses or fittings the specific pump needs, before planning the install. An alignment afterward is recommended, since converting from a steering box to a rack changes the steering geometry enough to shift toe settings.

Suspension Setup & Installation Checklist
- Inspect top mounts, damper seals, bushings, and ball joints prior to fitment.
- Set initial spring preload, collar heights, and damper rebound clicks symmetrically left to right.
- Torque all suspension control arm pivot bolts while the vehicle is at resting ride height (loaded suspension).
- Perform a complete 4-wheel laser alignment once ride height has settled to ensure optimal handling and tire wear.
