The Flaming River Manual Rack and Pinion Cradle Kit, part FR300-65MU, replaces the stock steering box on a 1965-70 Ford Mustang with a manual rack and pinion system, intended to lighten steering feel and tighten turning response.
What the kit includes
- A manual steel rack and pinion, chrome finish, with 3.50 turns lock-to-lock
- A welded mounting cradle that bolts into the stock locations
- A tilt steering column, steel construction with a natural finish
- Mounting brackets and hardware
Tie rod ends are not included and will need to be sourced separately. The kit works with the stock Mustang steering wheel, and installation does not require chassis modifications.
Fitting notes
Because this is a manual, not power-assisted, rack, expect a firmer steering feel than a factory power-steering-equipped Mustang, which some owners prefer for feedback and others find too heavy at low speeds; weigh that before choosing between this and a power version. An alignment after installation is recommended, since the geometry change from a steering box to a rack and pinion can shift toe settings.

Suspension Setup & Installation Checklist
- Inspect top mounts, damper seals, bushings, and ball joints prior to fitment.
- Set initial spring preload, collar heights, and damper rebound clicks symmetrically left to right.
- Torque all suspension control arm pivot bolts while the vehicle is at resting ride height (loaded suspension).
- Perform a complete 4-wheel laser alignment once ride height has settled to ensure optimal handling and tire wear.
