Details & Inspection Notes

Built on a Buick/Olds/Pontiac bellhousing pattern, the Hughes Performance 34-1B is a remanufactured 3-speed automatic with an Automatic/Manual valve body that lets you drive it like a stock automatic or take manual control of each gear. It carries a 550-horsepower rating, a 2.48 first gear ratio, and a 30-spline input shaft.

Street and strip, not strictly one or the other

An Automatic/Manual valve body is the detail that makes this a street-and-strip unit rather than a dedicated race piece: it shifts on its own in traffic, but lets a driver hold a gear or force an upshift when it counts at the track. A deep steel pan with a chrome finish adds fluid capacity for that mixed use, which matters more here than on a purely automatic case.

What to check before installing

Confirm your vehicle uses a BOP bellhousing bolt pattern, since this case will not bolt to a Chevy or Ford pattern without an adapter. Its 4.000-inch tailshaft takes a slip-on yoke, so size your driveshaft to that dimension, and budget separately for a torque converter and a cooler, since neither ships with the transmission.

Is this a new or used core? It is remanufactured, meaning it was rebuilt from a prior core rather than built new, to the same 550-horsepower rating and 2.48 first gear specification noted above.

Startup & Installation Checklist

  • Inspect all external gaskets, seals, spark plugs and timing components prior to installation.
  • Refill engine oil, transmission gear oil and coolant to manufacturer-specified capacities before initial cranking.
  • Prime the lubrication system and verify ECU wiring pinouts, sensors, and ground connections.
  • Our 2-year warranty covers internal lubricated components, cylinder heads and engine block from delivery, in addition to your statutory rights.
