Details & Inspection Notes
The Honda BF10D3SH is the standard (non-High-Thrust) 9.9 hp portable four-stroke, built as the simplest, lightest motor in this lineup at 92 pounds, rigged with a short 15-inch shaft, hand-tiller control, and pull-cord-only starting.
Short shaft, standard propeller
Unlike the High Thrust versions in this size class, the BF10D3SH uses a standard propeller tuned for a better balance of speed and handling rather than maximum pushing power, which suits dinghies, small jon boats, and light runabouts better than heavily loaded hulls. The 15-inch shaft is the shortest offered in this series and belongs on a low-transom boat; mounting it on a taller transom raises the propeller too close to the surface and invites cavitation.
Starting and what ships with it
Carburetor-fed and four-stroke, the twin-cylinder engine displaces 222cc and tops out around 5000-6000 rpm. Pull-cord starting only, with no battery, alternator wiring, or power tilt to maintain, keeps the unit light and simple. Supplied alongside the motor: fuel line, a charging system, an external 3-gallon fuel tank, a stop-switch lanyard, the owner's manual, and the propeller itself, with Honda's 5-year warranty on the powerhead.
Will a 15-inch shaft fit my boat? Measure from the transom top to the keel; 15 inches suits a short-transom hull. Does it charge a battery? It has a charging system, but starting itself is manual.
