At 140 hp, the BF140ALDA is Honda's shorter-shaft iST outboard, built on a 20-inch leg with electronic control over shift and throttle in place of a mechanical cable.

iST controls

iST replaces a mechanical shift-and-throttle cable with an electronic link between the helm and the engine, so make sure your rigging suits that interface before ordering rather than assuming a standard cable kit from a parts counter will work here. Four cylinders total 2354cc, fuel comes through EFI, and an electric starter handles starting. Honda rates the full-throttle range on this motor between 5000 and 6000 rpm.

Shaft fit

At 20 inches, measure your transom before buying, since this motor is built for that specific mounting height rather than a taller setup used elsewhere in Honda's lineup. Listed weight is 485 lbs, and both steering and throttle inputs route through the iST module instead of separate mechanical linkages running to the cowling. A boat already rigged for a cable-operated outboard will need its controls swapped to suit iST, which is worth checking before you order rather than after the motor arrives.
