Details & Inspection Notes
This new Chevrolet Performance 383 short block is the stroker foundation behind the SP383 crate engine family, combining a 3.800-inch stroke with 4.000-inch bores for strong low-end pull and more top-end horsepower than a standard small-block geometry delivers. It ships as a short block only, meaning cylinder heads are not included.
Why buyers choose a short block over a complete engine
Starting from a short block lets you pick your own cylinder heads, intake, and induction system to match your build's goals rather than inheriting a manufacturer's combination. With 64cc heads, Chevrolet Performance figures compression at approximately 9.6:1, giving you a reference point for choosing heads and planning fuel and ignition before buying anything else.
What is under the hood
A cast-iron casting with 4-bolt main caps houses a forged steel crankshaft, heavy-duty forged steel connecting rods, and hypereutectic aluminum pistons, all externally balanced. Recommended ignition timing is 32 degrees total at 4000 rpm, and Chevrolet Performance caps maximum recommended engine speed at 6000 rpm, numbers worth keeping in mind as you spec your distributor or ignition controller and your valvetrain.
Planning your build
Do I need to buy heads separately? Yes, cylinder heads are not part of this short block and must be sourced on their own. Is this a good base for a street engine? The stroke and bore combination favors torque-focused street and tow builds as much as it does performance applications, so match your head and cam choice to your intended use.
