The 2019 BF20D3SHT takes the short-shaft side of Honda's 20 hp line and adds electric start plus power tilt, part of a family Honda builds to be among the lightest in its class even though the smallest members start around 104 pounds, well under this unit's heavier, more-equipped build. PGM ignition, water cooling, and carbureted delivery from a 3.2-gallon tank carry over, with a rev range opening past 5000 and running to 6000, now supported by a 12-amp alternator.
What the added gear changes
Power tilt moves the motor's angle from a switch instead of a hand lever, and electric start brings push-button starting, both layered onto the same tiller steering used on the manual version of this engine. Drive still runs to a four-blade aluminum propeller through forward, neutral, and reverse.
Features built into this engine
Honda rates it at 3-star CARB emissions, includes an onboard engine alert system, and uses three-stage carburetion for better fuel economy, with wet-sump lubrication and FC-W 10W-30 oil. Fifteen inches remains the short-shaft choice here, well suited to a shallower transom than the long-shaft 20-inch build in this family needs.
