Where the DHLCH runs a 20-inch shaft, Honda's 2018 BF2.3DHSCH drops to a 15-inch short shaft on the same 2.3 hp, single-cylinder, 57.2cc platform, aimed at canoes, small tenders, and jon boats rather than a deeper-transom hull. Forced-air cooling, carbureted fuel delivery, and a full-throttle band between 5000 and 6000 rpm carry over unchanged, and this new, China-built motor is rated for saltwater under Honda's 5-year warranty.
Why go short
A short shaft on too deep a transom buries the propeller further than it should sit, hurting handling; Honda also sells this engine on the 20-inch DHLCH shaft for boats that need the longer reach. The lower unit swivels a full 360 degrees for tight maneuvering, driven through a 2.42:1 gear ratio to a small 3-blade polypropylene propeller.
Living with a motor this size
Meant to be carried rather than hoisted, this engine starts on a pull cord with transistor ignition and a centrifugal clutch, no battery anywhere in the picture. It still needs clean fuel and the right oil ratio at every fill, especially for an easy first pull after a season in storage, and a small external tank keeps the whole package light.
