Honda's 2018 BF15D3SHS steps up from the base BF15D3SH with electric starting on the same short 15-inch tiller-steered shaft, at a listed 124 lbs.

Starting and electrics

Electric start is the headline difference here, backed by a stronger 12-amp alternator than the manual-only model, which helps if you're also running lights or small electronics off this engine. Trim and tilt remain manual, worked at the tiller handle rather than a switch at a console. This is the same two-cylinder, 350cc powerhead as the base model underneath, running a SOHC head and PGM-IG spark with two valves on each cylinder, bore at 59mm and stroke at 64mm.

Fuel and running range

Fuel comes carbureted, burning 86-octane gasoline pulled from a tank outside the cowling that holds 3.2 gallons, plumbed in on a quick-connect fitting. This engine tops out at 4,500-5,500 rpm per Honda, shifts forward-neutral-reverse at 2.08:1, and its block carries a saltwater rating in addition to fresh water. A four-blade, aluminum propeller measuring 9¼ by 10 inches comes mounted on the gearcase, oil is FC-W 10W-30 run through a wet-sump system, and there is no internal battery.

In the crate

Along with the motor, the crate holds a trim limiter, oil, and an anti-theft fitting, plus the tiller handle, a spare propeller, and mounting cables. The Teleflex SL3 throttle control included here mounts to either the top or the side, and the fuel tank arrives with its tilt switch and quick-connect fitting attached, alongside the owner's manual and a 5-year warranty card.
