Honda's 2018 BF15D3SH is a 114 lb, 15 hp portable outboard with a short 15-inch shaft, tiller steering, and manual starting throughout.

Why the short shaft

This shorter shaft suits a lower transom than the long-shaft version Honda also builds at this horsepower, and nothing on this motor is electric: shifting, trim and tilt, and starting are all done by hand, with no battery or starter motor anywhere in the package. The two-cylinder block runs 350cc, with SOHC valve gear, PGM-IG ignition, two valves per cylinder, and a 59mm bore paired against a 64mm stroke measurement.

Fuel and running range

The carburetor on this engine draws 86-octane unleaded gasoline through a tank mounted outside holding 3.2 gallons, connected via a quick-connect fuel line. Full throttle on this model tops out in Honda's 4,500-5,500 rpm band, the final drive steps through forward, neutral, and reverse at 2.08 to 1, and saltwater use is rated for the block alongside fresh water. A 6-amp unit covers charging, and lubrication is wet-sump, circulating FC-W 10W-30 oil.

In the crate

This engine comes with a four-blade aluminum propeller sized 9¼ by 10 inches, already mounted. The crate adds the tiller handle, an external tank with its quick-connect line and tilt switch, a top- or side-mount Teleflex SL3 throttle control, mounting cables, a trim limiter, oil, an anti-theft fitting, the owner's manual, and a 5-year warranty card.
