Honda's 2017 BF20D3SH is the short-shaft, manual-start build of its 20 hp outboard, 15 inches on the transom bracket, with tiller steering throughout. Water circulates through the two-cylinder, 350cc block for cooling, PGM handles ignition duties, a carburetor meters 86-octane gasoline from the 3.2-gallon tank, and the tachometer tops out near 6000 once past 5000 at full throttle.
Fitment to check
Fifteen inches suits a shallower transom than the other, long-shaft build of this same engine; confirm which length your boat calls for before ordering so the propeller sits at the correct depth. Trim and tilt are both hand-operated here, and starting is by pull cord with no battery anywhere in the system.
Features built into this engine
An integrated carrying handle makes the motor easier to move on and off a boat, this engine carries Honda's 4-Front corrosion protection to help fight off salt and spray, and its wet-sump system is filled with FC-W 10W-30 oil. A 6-amp alternator will charge a battery for accessories while the engine runs, and each cylinder uses two valves in its SOHC head.
