Details & Inspection Notes

This Yamaha F40JEA pairs a jet lower unit with the familiar 747cc, 40 hp midrange engine. Steering runs through remote mechanical controls, the starter is electric, the shaft measures 20 inches, and the whole package comes in at 219 pounds.

Built for easy starts

Under the cowling, an electronic control module works alongside a long-track intake manifold and a single throttle valve, a combination tuned toward quick starts, which helps offset some of the responsiveness a jet drive otherwise gives up against an equivalent propeller-driven motor.

What's included

The jet lower unit itself is standard equipment here, alongside Nitro-assisted tilt, a fuel line, a link arm for steering, and the printed owner's manual.

Where jet drive makes sense

Choose this over a propeller-driven 40 hp motor if you regularly run shallow sandbars, grass flats or rocky shoals where a spinning prop would be at risk; otherwise a propeller-driven version will generally run more efficiently.

Watch your cooling telltale

Glance at the small cooling-water stream (the telltale) near the back of the motor each time you start up; on a jet unit it's your quickest clue that the intake isn't blocked before you ever get underway.

Fitment

Your transom should take a 20-inch shaft, and the console needs mechanical steering cables already run to the stern; this configuration has no tiller option. The unit ships new.

Common questions

Does it include a propeller? No, it runs a jet pump instead.
