Details & Inspection Notes
This TREMEC TKX is built for a family of small-block Ford V8s: 289 and 302 cubic-inch engines, the 347 stroker, and both the Windsor and Cleveland versions of the 351, aimed at Mustangs, Falcons, Fairlanes, Broncos, and F-Series trucks along with street rods and pro-touring builds. First gear comes in at 2.87, and the 600 lb-ft torque rating covers everything from mild street engines to serious stroker builds.
Why the fifth gear matters
An overdrive fifth of 0.68 drops cruising rpm on the highway, which helps fuel economy, reduces wear, and quiets the cabin on long drives, while reverse sits at 2.56 and shift quality holds together to 7,500 rpm, with the driveline itself good for 8,000 rpm. The redesigned aluminum case also opens up more transmission-tunnel clearance than earlier Ford manual gearboxes, which eases installation in tight engine bays.
What to plan for
Dry weight runs about 99 lbs, the input side spins on a 1.0625-inch shaft, and the output carries 31 splines, with roughly 2.7 quarts of fluid needed. An inspection cover, a reverse-light switch, rail plugs for the shifter, and the short-throw shifter itself all come packed in the box, but a bellhousing, clutch, flywheel, and yoke are not, so add those to your parts list along with a crossmember and whatever driveshaft work your vehicle needs.
Does this bolt straight to a small-block Ford? It is engineered for that engine family, though the surrounding bellhousing, clutch, and flywheel are sourced separately.
How much fluid does it take? About 2.7 quarts, using TREMEC's recommended manual transmission fluid or a Dexron III-type ATF.
