Details & Inspection Notes

The MSD 8523 is a Ready-to-Run Pro-Billet distributor for AMC V8 engines, built with an inductive module inside the housing that produces up to 7.5 amps of output without needing a separate external ignition box.

Installation

Because the ignition module is built in, wiring is a simple three-connection hookup, which keeps the swap from a points or factory distributor straightforward. The housing and base are CNC machined billet aluminum, with a polished, QPQ-coated steel shaft riding on a sealed ball bearing for stable rotation at high rpm.

Advance and trigger details

Mechanical advance is adjustable with the supplied springs and stop bushings, and a vacuum advance canister is included for better part-throttle economy, with the option to lock it out entirely. The advance plate and weights are stamped from chrome moly steel and treated with a QPQ coating for lower friction, with nylon pads for smooth operation and tig-welded advance weight pins. It ships with an HEI-style cap and rotor that accepts Cap-A-Dapts, includes a built-in rev limiter, and carries CARB executive order approval.

Who it suits

This distributor suits an AMC V8 owner who wants a single-box ignition upgrade without adding a separate MSD control module, with the spark output, rev limiting and CARB approval already built into the housing.
