MSD 5099 DynaForce Starter, AMC - All except 4.0L

The MSD 5099 DynaForce is a gear-reduction starter built for AMC engines, covering all AMC applications except the 4.0L, and finished in MSD's powder-coated red housing.

How it's built

Inside, a three-horsepower motor cranks through a 4.4:1 gear reduction, which trades motor speed for torque at the ring gear to turn over higher-compression engines more confidently than a factory starter sized for lower compression. The armature is balanced during assembly and supported on two ball bearings for smooth engagement, which MSD designs for thousands of starts over the unit's life.

Fit and clearance

MSD built the housing in a downsized profile specifically to clear headers and oil pans that a stock-sized starter can interfere with, which matters on an AMC engine already running aftermarket exhaust or a deeper sump. The red powder coat finish is meant to hold its look under the car over time rather than flake or fade from heat.

Who it suits
