Details & Inspection Notes

The XL Verado 400 runs a 25-inch shaft without counter rotation. It is the non-counter-rotating counterpart to the CXL version at the same shaft length.

XL versus CXL

Shaft length and engine are identical between the XL and CXL; the only difference is that counter rotation is offered on the CXL but not here. Pick the XL for a single engine or a same-rotation pair, and the CXL if an opposite-rotating twin is planned. Settle on rotation needs before ordering rather than after, to avoid buying the wrong configuration for a planned twin install.

Standard Verado 400 features

Shifting on this unit is handled electronically, the steering wheel gets hydraulic assistance, engine mounting isolates vibration, and the starter guards against overload. 24 valves and dual overhead cams define this 2.6-liter inline-six, tipping the scale at 668 pounds. Full throttle RPM here is rated 6200 to 6800. You'll find a tool kit, mounting hardware, and the owner's manual included. A propeller does not come with this unit.

Is this engine new? Yes.

What's the warranty period? 3 years, backed by Mercury Marine.

Can I buy a second one later for a twin setup? Yes, as long as it spins the same direction; this configuration is not built for opposite rotation.

Is a 25-inch shaft the right call for a typical center console? Often yes, but always confirm against your own transom measurement rather than assuming.
