Details & Inspection Notes
At the top of Mercury's Verado range sits the 600, a V12 four-stroke displacing 7.6 liters (461 cubic inches) at a lightest dry weight of 1260 pounds, offered in 20, 25, 30, or 35-inch shaft lengths. It is built for larger boats that need serious range and top-end performance from a single or paired outboard.
What makes the 600 different from the rest of the Verado line
This is Mercury's first outboard with a steerable gearcase, giving it handling characteristics not available on the smaller V-8 or inline-six Verados, along with an industry-first two-speed transmission. A 150-amp alternator supports the electronics load on a boat this size, and the gearcase runs a 2.50:1 ratio. Full throttle range is 5600 to 6400 RPM, with electric start and smart overload protection.
Choosing a shaft length
Because the 600 is offered across four shaft lengths, from 20 to 35 inches, match the choice to transom height the same way you would on any other Verado, rather than guessing based on boat length alone. Power trim and tilt is standard on every length.
What sets the steerable gearcase apart? It is described as the first of its kind in the outboard segment, intended to improve handling and control compared with a fixed gearcase.
Does it need a special electrical setup? It draws from a 150-amp alternator, which is worth confirming against your boat's existing electrical system before installation.
