Details & Inspection Notes

The CL version of the Verado 400 is the short-shaft option in this top inline-six Verado, running a 20-inch shaft and counter rotation available. Boats with shallower transoms call for exactly this shorter shaft, rather than the longer options offered elsewhere in this line.

What the dual-overhead-cam design brings

This top-of-line-six engine runs dual overhead cams and 24 valves across 2.6 liters, weighing 668 pounds. On this engine, shifting is electronic, steering gets hydraulic assistance, and the engine mounting is designed to isolate vibration, with overload protection built into the starter.

Fitting and twin setups

Confirm your transom suits a 20-inch shaft before ordering; this is the shortest option in this line. Counter rotation being offered here fits the same twin-installation logic used across the rest of the line: pair it with an opposite-spinning unit if that's the plan. Full throttle range runs 6200 to 6800 RPM. This unit is supplied with mounting hardware, a tool kit, as well as the owner's manual. This unit does not ship with a propeller.

Is the CL meant for single or twin installs? Either; counter rotation is available but not required if running one engine.

What's the warranty on this one? Mercury Marine's 3-year term applies.

How does the CL's shaft compare to the rest of the 400 line? It is the shortest option Mercury offers on this engine; longer shafts are available if your transom calls for them.
