Details & Inspection Notes

This Mercury JET 40ELPT FourStroke Outboard runs a jet pump instead of a gearcase and propeller, built to clear shallow or debris-choked water that would stop a conventional outboard cold.

Before you order

This 40 hp, four-cylinder jet is EFI-fed and comes rigged for remote mechanical steering, with electric start and a 15 inch shaft. Because the pump trades some efficiency for shallow-water capability, top-end performance will differ from a prop-driven 40 hp motor.

Who it suits

The jet housing sits level with the boat's bottom, which is also why Mercury fits this design to rescue boats needing a protected, shallow-capable drive; a stainless impeller resists wear from sand, gravel, and shells pulled through the pump.

What comes with it

A tool kit, mounting hardware, and the owner's manual ship with the engine, under Mercury Marine's 3-year warranty. Full throttle runs between 5000 and 6000 rpm with power trim and tilt.

Common questions

Remote or tiller steering? Remote mechanical steering on this model.

Is a propeller included? No, this jet unit runs on an impeller rather than a propeller.

Does the jet pump need different maintenance? The impeller and pump housing take the place of a gearcase and prop, so inspect those for wear from sand or debris instead.

Will it run on open, deep water too? Yes, though the tradeoff for shallow-water ability is some efficiency compared with a propeller-driven 40 hp motor.
