Details & Inspection Notes
Manual starting and the long shaft define this new Mercury 8HP 8MLH, an 8 HP twin-cylinder four-stroke Mercury lists at 84 lbs.
Pull-start simplicity
Without an alternator or battery required, this setup stays simple, which suits a backup motor or a boat running without onboard electrics. Idle quality and cold starts are both improved on this version of the 8 HP engine compared to older stock. Full throttle spans 5000 to 6000 rpm, running SOHC induction.
Fit and what comes with it
Jon, utility, and small sail boats call for this longer shaft, along with soft-hull inflatable and aluminum tiller hulls riding too high for the short-shaft 8MH to reach the water properly. A Phantom Black propeller, 3-blade and aluminum, is part of the package. A remote 3.2-gallon tank, carry handle, kill-switch lanyard, and tool kit round out what's included, on top of the owner's manual. Mercury's factory warranty runs three years from purchase.
Q: Does it include a propeller? Yes, a 3-blade aluminum one comes with the motor.
Q: Is starting manual or electric? Manual, by pull cord, with no alternator or battery on this build.
Q: Does the motor come with its own oil? No, bring your own four-stroke oil for the first fill and later changes.
Compare it with other Mercury outboards in the 8 HP lineup.
