Details & Inspection Notes

New from Mercury and listed at 84 lbs, this 8HP 8ELH runs an electric starter and tiller steering on the long shaft.

Running details

Full throttle spans 5000 to 6000 rpm, drawing fuel through an SOHC induction system. Mercury has refined this engine generation for an easier start and a calmer idle than older units carried. At 84 lbs, the motor stays light enough for one person to mount or remove from the transom without a hoist, despite the longer shaft and electric starter.

Which boats it fits

Boats riding higher at the transom than the short-shaft 8EH calls for are the right fit here, including jon, utility, and small sail boats, plus soft-hull inflatable and aluminum tiller hulls. In the box: an owner's manual and tool kit, a lanyard-style stop switch, a built-in carry handle, a 3.2-gallon remote tank, and a Phantom Black 3-blade aluminum propeller. Mercury's factory warranty runs three years from the date of purchase.

Q: Is the fuel tank built in or remote on this model? Remote, holding 3.2 gallons.

Q: Short shaft or long shaft on this one? Long — pair it with a boat that needs the extra shaft length.

Q: Does it need a battery to start? Yes, electric starting here draws on the boat's own battery rather than one built in.
