Details & Inspection Notes

This used Mercury 5 HP FourStroke Outboard Motor is a carbureted, manual-start tiller motor on a short 15-inch shaft, and at 57 pounds dry Mercury lists it as the lightest build in its category.

What is on the motor

This single cylinder measures 123 cc, which Mercury's other scale puts at 7.5 cubic inches, bore and stroke set at 2.32 and 1.77 inches. A carburetor feeds it on 87 octane fuel, CDI ignition with electronic spark advance lights it off, and full throttle climbs as high as 5500 rpm, with 4500 rpm marking the bottom of that range. Gearing runs 2.15:1 through a forward-neutral-reverse shift lever, trim adjusts manually across 6 positions, and a shallow water trim range of 16 degrees lets the propeller lift clear near a ramp or shoreline; shallow water drive is built in as standard equipment rather than an add-on.

Fuel and what is included

Tank capacity built into the motor is 0.3 US gallons, close to 1.1 liters, and a bigger 3.2-gallon tank, near 12 liters, can be added for trips that run longer than a quick outing. Mercury FourStroke 10W-30 oil is specified at service time, a propeller is included with the motor, and it is finished in Phantom Black. Coverage follows the usual Mercury pattern for a motor sold this way: three years standard, with a further two years available through the Product Protection Gold plan, five years running total.

Startup & Installation Checklist

  • Inspect all external gaskets, seals, spark plugs and timing components prior to installation.
