Details & Inspection Notes

The new Mercury 40HP MLHGA FourStroke Outboard keeps things mechanical: manual pull-start, a carbureted engine, tiller steering, and gas-assist trim, with no battery or onboard electronics required to get it running.

Who should consider a carbureted, manual-start motor

Boaters who want to avoid battery upkeep, wiring, or electronic fuel injection components end up with a simpler motor to maintain here, trading pull-starting by rope for the convenience of turning a key. This inline-three four-stroke displaces 45.6 cubic inches and reaches 5500 to 6000 rpm at full throttle, breathing through a carburetor instead of EFI, and running cooler-blooded without the sensors a fuel-injected motor relies on. Gas-assist trim uses engine compression to help raise and lower the motor over its travel, rather than an electric or hydraulic trim pump doing the work.

Shaft, weight, and what is included

It is built on a 20-inch long shaft and weighs 204 pounds dry, matching the EFI tiller version of this engine despite the simpler induction system underneath. A fitting for the fuel line, a basic tool kit, and the hardware needed to mount it travel with the motor in the box, alongside the printed owner's manual. Mercury's three-year warranty covers this motor as well, same as the rest of the four-stroke lineup. Expect the usual trade-off of a carbureted engine: simpler to service at home, but without the self-diagnostics an EFI motor's warning lights provide, so keep an eye on fuel quality and the carburetor's condition between uses.

Startup & Installation Checklist
