Details & Inspection Notes

This new Mercury 40HP MLHGA FourStroke Outboard with Clamp is the same manual-start, carbureted, gas-assist-trim motor as the standard MLHGA, but adds a thumb screw clamp bracket so it can be clamped to a transom rather than bolted on permanently.

Why a clamp bracket

A clamp-on bracket lets you mount and remove the motor without drilling bolt holes, which suits a boat that is only used occasionally as a kicker or auxiliary, or a tender that gets swapped between a few different hulls over a season. Underneath, nothing else changes from the standard MLHGA: a carbureted inline-three four-stroke engine, pull-started by hand, steered by its tiller, and running up to a full-throttle range Mercury sets at 5500 to 6000 rpm on the same 20-inch long shaft.

Weight, trim, and what ships with it

Dry weight is 204 pounds, and gas-assist trim handles raising and lowering the motor without an electric pump doing the lifting. Mercury adds the thumb screw clamp bracket on top of the usual kit: mounting hardware, a set of basic tools, a fitting to join the fuel line, and the printed owner's manual. This motor carries that same three-year Mercury Marine warranty. Because the bracket clamps rather than bolts, it is worth checking that your transom is thick and sound enough to hold the clamp tight under load, especially at higher speeds where vibration can gradually loosen a clamp that was not seated tightly to begin with.

Startup & Installation Checklist
