Details & Inspection Notes
The new Mercury 40HP ELPT FourStroke Outboard drops the tiller for remote mechanical steering and shift, built for console-steered boats, on the same 20-inch long shaft and 204-pound dry weight as the tiller ELHPT version.
What changes without a tiller
Remote mechanical steering and shift means this motor is meant to run off a steering wheel and separate shift and throttle controls at a console, not a handle mounted at the motor. Underneath the cowling, Mercury builds this on the familiar inline-three four-stroke platform rated at 45.6 cubic inches of displacement, turning 5500 to 6000 rpm when the throttle opens all the way, fed by electronic fuel injection. Power trim and tilt comes standard, so raising and lowering the motor is electric rather than muscled by hand at the dock.
Before you order
Check that your boat is already wired for remote controls, since this model does not include a tiller handle as a fallback if your console is not set up for it; a boat built around tiller steering would need rework to take this version. Mounting hardware and a quick-connect fuel line come with the motor, along with an owner's manual, and Mercury throws in a basic tool kit as well. The propeller is not included and needs to be matched separately to your boat and the way it is loaded. A three-year warranty from Mercury Marine applies here too.
