This new Mercury 40HP ELPT FourStroke Outboard with Command Thrust pairs the 40 horsepower four-stroke with Mercury's larger Command Thrust gearcase, aimed at pushing a heavier pontoon or loaded hull, on a 20-inch long shaft with remote steering.

Why Command Thrust

The Command Thrust gearcase swings a larger-diameter propeller than Mercury's standard 40 horsepower gearcase, which is built to generate more thrust at low speed for displacement hulls, pontoons, and loaded boats rather than for chasing top speed. Displacement is 60.8 cubic inches, full throttle runs 5500 to 6000 rpm, and electronic fuel injection feeds the engine. Dry weight is 260 pounds, heavier than the standard-gearcase version, which tracks with the larger gearcase housing and propeller hanging off the back of the motor. If you are moving up from a smaller tiller motor, expect noticeably more low-speed shove and a slower top-end climb in exchange.

Setup and what ships with it

Steering and shift are remote rather than tiller, so this motor is meant for console-steered boats, and power trim and tilt is standard equipment that raises and lowers the motor without manual effort. Mercury's box includes a tool kit, an owner's manual, and the mounting hardware needed to hang the motor, plus the fitting for a quick-connect fuel line; the propeller is sold separately to match the Command Thrust gearcase and the way your boat is loaded.
