Details & Inspection Notes

The Mercury 400XXL Verado FourStroke pairs the supercharged 400 horsepower inline six with a 30-inch shaft and standard rotation, leaving counter rotation as an option carried instead by the CXXL version of this engine.

How the engine runs

Mercury lists this six-cylinder, dual-overhead-cam engine at 2.6 liters and 158.5 cubic inches, with 24 valves and a supercharger running charge-air cooling alongside electronic boost pressure control; full throttle lands between 6200 and 6800 rpm. Mercury tuned this engine's oiling path to run at a stable temperature, trimming the condensation and dilution that build up inside a crankcase over time. Fuel delivery is sequential multi-port EFI, the ignition is SmartCraft's digital inductive system, and wet-sump lubrication is built into the block, while electro-hydraulic power steering and SmartCraft Engine Guardian round out the control side; electric start uses SmartStart, with digital throttle and shift sold separately.

Trim range, weight, and fuel

Tilt reaches 73 degrees and trim moves through 20 degrees, both via a 1.75:1 gearcase, with exhaust exiting through the propeller under SmartCraft programmable power trim and tilt. Dry weight sits at 668 pounds, the lightest Mercury lists for this platform. Mercury specifies unleaded fuel at 89 octane minimum, up to 10 percent ethanol, and an 8.5-quart oil capacity using Mercury FourStroke 25W-40 marine oil; this one is finished in Phantom Black with the propeller sold separately.
