Details & Inspection Notes
Mercury's 400XL Verado Outboard Motor is the standard-rotation, 25-inch-shaft version of the supercharged 400 horsepower six-cylinder Verado, used condition, with counter rotation available instead as the separate CXL model rather than built in here.
Powerhead and controls
Six cylinders with dual overhead camshafts and 24 valves give this engine 2.6 liters of displacement, listed by Mercury as 158.5 cubic inches, and a supercharger with charge-air cooling and electronic boost control pushes full throttle up to a range Mercury sets at 6200 to 6800 rpm. Sequential multi-port electronic fuel injection supplies fuel, SmartCraft digital inductive ignition fires the spark, and an integrated wet sump keeps the engine lubricated. Electro-hydraulic power steering is standard, the SmartCraft Engine Guardian system watches the motor as it runs, and electric start uses SmartStart; digital throttle and shift is sold separately for owners building out a full SmartCraft helm.
Trim, weight, and running gear
Power trim and tilt includes SmartCraft programmable tilt; trim range spans 20 degrees and tilt reaches 73 degrees, driven through a 1.75:1 gearcase with exhaust routed through the propeller. Dry weight is 668 pounds, Mercury's lightest build for this family. Fuel should be unleaded rated 89 octane or higher, ethanol content held to 10 percent at most, with an 8.5-quart oil change calling for Mercury FourStroke 25W-40. It comes finished in Phantom Black, and the propeller is sold separately.
