Details & Inspection Notes
The Mercury 400CXXL Verado FourStroke is the 30-inch-shaft sibling to the 400CXL, carrying the same supercharged inline-six engine and standard counter rotation, built for taller transoms on larger outboard-rigged boats.
What is under the cowling
Six cylinders, dual overhead camshafts, and 24 valves make up this 2.6-liter, 158.5 cubic-inch engine, boosted by a supercharger paired with charge-air cooling and electronic control over boost pressure. Mercury rates full throttle between 6200 and 6800 rpm. SmartCraft digital inductive ignition handles spark, an integrated wet sump manages lubrication, and sequential multi-port electronic fuel injection meters fuel delivery. This engine is engineered to keep oil temperature consistent, which helps hold condensation and dilution in check over the life of the motor.
Handling, equipment, and what ships with it
Electro-hydraulic power steering and SmartCraft programmable power trim and tilt come standard, with a 1.75:1 gearcase ratio, trim movement of 20 degrees, and tilt reaching 73 degrees. Dry weight is 668 pounds, the lightest Mercury lists for this engine family, and exhaust exits through the propeller. Mercury calls for unleaded fuel of at least 89 octane with up to 10 percent ethanol, and an oil capacity of 8.5 quarts of Mercury FourStroke 25W-40 marine oil. This motor comes finished in Phantom Black, and the propeller is not included, so plan to source one to match your boat.
