Details & Inspection Notes
The Mercury 300HP L FourStroke Outboard carries a 20 inch shaft and remote mechanical steering, the shortest shaft Mercury lists in this 300 horsepower range, meant for boats with a shallower transom than the other shaft lengths in Mercury's 300 horsepower range.
Fit first
Getting the transom measurement right matters more on a V8 this size than on a small outboard, since getting it wrong hurts handling and cooling and costs far more to correct after delivery. Remote mechanical steering means the controls bolt to a console with cables rather than a tiller.
Specifications
This V8 runs electronic fuel injection, starts electrically, and tips the scale at 527 lbs dry. Power trim and tilt ships standard, letting running angle adjust from a switch rather than a hand lever, which counts for more on an engine this heavy.
Included and warranty
Mounting hardware, a tool kit, and the manual round out what ships with this V8, covered by Mercury's 3-year warranty. The propeller is sold separately; pick pitch and material based on your boat and the loads you typically carry.
Mounting notes
A V8 this size puts more stress on a transom than a smaller outboard does, so have the mounting bolts, bracing, and overall transom condition checked before installation, especially on an older hull.
Is this the shortest shaft Mercury offers at 300 horsepower? Yes, among the options in this range, L carries the shortest shaft Mercury builds. Does it include a propeller? No.
