Details & Inspection Notes
Built with a 25-inch shaft and remote mechanical controls sold separately, this used Mercury 250XL FourStroke is the same 279 CID, 4.6-liter V-8 family as its shorter-shaft sibling, with a quad-cam, 32-valve, 64-degree block.
Steering is the headline difference
Controls here are remote mechanical rather than digital, and they are sold separately rather than bundled; hydraulic or power steering assist are optional additions on top. A 25-inch shaft suits a taller transom than the shorter-shaft version of this same engine.
Specification
Full throttle RPM runs 5200-6000. Mercury lists 527 lbs dry weight, while its gearcase runs a 1.75:1 ratio and the 85-amp alternator (1071 watts) includes idle charge. Trim maxes out at 20 degrees, tilt at 73 degrees.
Mercury's own figures identify the lightest-model designation for this dry weight, with an integrated wet sump lubrication system.
Protection and condition
SmartCraft Engine Guardian provides engine protection, and starting is electric with SmartStart protection.
Q: Does this come with a propeller? No, propellers are sourced separately to match your gearing.
Q: Is this one new or used? It is sold used, not new.
Recommended oil capacity is 7.0 quarts, and the gearcase measures 5.44 inches. As with any used motor, confirm hours and service history before you rely on the written specification alone.
Steering hardware is the main thing to check if you are replacing a different control type on your current boat.
