Details & Inspection Notes

This Mercury 250HP XXL carries the longest shaft offered in this V-8 line, running remote mechanical steering on a standard, non-counter-rotating gearcase, aimed at the tallest standard transoms this family covers.

Shaft length is the deciding factor

Get this measurement right before ordering, since an oversized shaft on a shorter transom runs the gearcase too deep and an undersized one leaves the cavitation plate exposed.

Rotation and control

This one is not listed with counter rotation available. Treat it as the standard-rotation choice at this length; confirm with us if your rigging needs a counter-rotating pair. Remote mechanical steering uses cable controls rather than Mercury's digital system. Expect 5200 to 6000 RPM at full throttle. Displacement on the spec sheet reads 4.6. Weight, dry, lands at 527 lbs.

Q: What's included with the motor? Included at no extra charge: mounting hardware, the owner's manual, a tool kit. No propeller is included; match one to your boat once mounted.

EFI induction and power trim and tilt both come as standard. Mercury Marine's 3-year coverage applies to this new unit. Ask a rigger to double-check steering and control compatibility if you're swapping motor types. An incompatible helm is a common and avoidable surprise. Keeping the transom measurement on file makes future motor replacements faster to specify correctly. Shaft length decides fitment here far more than the horsepower number on the box does. This is the shaft and steering combination most commonly ordered for sportfishing conversions on tall-transom hulls.
