Details & Inspection Notes

This Mercury 250HP L FourStroke uses the shortest shaft offered in this V-8 line, built for a standard transom rather than a raised mount, with remote mechanical steering as its control type.

Match the shaft to your transom

This shaft length is the baseline measurement Mercury uses across much of its outboard range, so a conventional transom height is the right candidate rather than a raised or jacked-up one. Measure before ordering, since a short-shaft motor on a tall transom runs the cavitation plate too high in the water.

Steering and figures

Remote mechanical steering uses cable-driven controls at the helm rather than an electronic system. Mercury's figure for dry weight is 527 lbs. Full throttle lands between 5200 and 6000 RPM. The engine's displacement rating is 4.6. The engine is EFI-equipped, with power trim and tilt standard. Mercury Marine's own 3-year warranty is included.

Q: Does this version offer counter rotation? Confirm with us before ordering, since this listing does not spell it out the way some longer-shaft versions in the line do.

Q: What travels with the motor? Tool kit, owner's manual, mounting hardware: that is the standard package here. Propeller selection is a separate purchase matched to your boat. Shaft length and control type matter more here than the horsepower number alone. Two motors with the same horsepower can still fit very differently. A boat that previously ran a counter-rotating pair may need a matching unit again if only one side is replaced. Transom height is the single most-measured detail in an outboard swap, and for good reason. This is the shaft length most often paired with single-engine console boats running a lower transom height.
