Details & Inspection Notes

This used Mercury 225XXL FourStroke Cold Fusion DTS runs a quad-cam V6 known for strong mid-range torque at a lightest-in-class weight for its horsepower, on a 30 inch shaft, with DTS controls and Cold Fusion White paint.

Powerhead

The 3.4 liter, 209 cubic inch V6 here runs 24 valves off dual overhead camshafts in a 64-degree configuration, bore 3.6 inches, stroke 3.4 inches. The alternator puts out 85 amps (1071 watts) with idle charge.

Fit and rigging

At 30 inches, this is the tallest shaft offered in this V6 line, so measure your transom carefully before ordering rather than assuming the shorter CXL or XL will do. DTS controls are sold separately, electric start runs through SmartStart Protection, and the steering hardware can step up to hydraulic, power, or joystick piloting. This unit is rated 475 lbs dry. Propeller is not included.

Cold Fusion White tends to run alongside the plain finish at a similar price point in this family, so choose based on which cowling color suits your boat rather than expecting a difference in output or rigging. Either way, the mid-range torque this quad-cam design is known for shows up most when accelerating a loaded boat onto plane, rather than at a steady cruise. Used buyers at this hour range should still ask for maintenance records on the water pump and gearcase seals, the two items that cause most unplanned outboard repairs.

What shaft length does this use? 30 inches, for taller transoms.
