Details & Inspection Notes
Mercury built the used 225XL SeaPro Commercial DTS around corrosion-resistant, commercial-grade aluminum and coatings, pairing a 225 hp V8 with a 25 inch shaft for operators who need an engine that shrugs off salt exposure day after day.
Why the V8 runs differently
The block measures 4.6 liters, or 279 cubic inches, spread across a 64 degree vee with 32 valves on dual overhead cams; the factory lists a 3.6 inch bore paired to a 3.4 inch stroke. The gearcase runs 1.75 to 1 through a 5.44 inch housing, a notably different ratio from the recreational V6 FourStroke line.
Controls and duty
A DTS harness is a separate purchase here, and the control side can run mechanical or digital, paired with hydraulic, power, or Big Tiller steering. SmartStart Protection backs the electric starter, and this one scales in at 527 lbs dry, heavier than the V6 line because of the larger block. Because it is built for fleet duty, expect heavier-duty internals than a comparable recreational outboard, even where the horsepower rating reads the same.
Ask any seller of a used commercial-rated engine like this one for its logged hours and service intervals, since fleet motors often run far more annual hours than a recreational unit of the same age.
Is this built for commercial duty? Yes, intended for sustained working use rather than occasional recreational trips.
