Details & Inspection Notes
The used Mercury 225CXL SeaPro Commercial DTS swaps the recreational V6 for a heavier-duty 225 hp V8, on a 25 inch shaft with Digital Throttle and Shift, aimed at operators who run their motor every working day rather than on weekends.
Why the V8 feels different
This V8 runs 4.6 liters (279 cubic inches), a 64-degree vee with dual overhead cams working 32 valves; bore sits at 3.6 inches, stroke at 3.4 inches. SeaPro tunes full throttle to a lower 4800 to 5600 rpm band, which Mercury pairs with torque aimed at sustained loads rather than top-end speed.
Controls and duty cycle
Mercury positions the SeaPro series for charter boats, patrol craft, and working vessels that log far more annual hours than a typical weekend runabout, and this rating carries a 2 year limited standard warranty covering unlimited hours, unlike a recreational-use warranty. DTS is sold on its own for this one, and the rigging works with either mechanical or digital control heads, plus a steering choice of hydraulic, power, or Big Tiller. SmartStart Protection covers the electric starter, and this block tips the scale at 527 lbs dry, heavier than the V6 FourStroke because of its larger displacement. A battery-management system and strong charging output are built in for the extra electronics these boats tend to carry.
Is this engine rated for commercial use? Yes, with unlimited hours under its 2 year limited commercial warranty.
