Details & Inspection Notes
The Mercury 15HP 15MH EFI Outboard is a manual-start, tiller-steered 15 HP motor with a 15-inch short shaft, weighing 103 pounds.
Manual start, tiller control
Pulling a start cord rather than turning a key keeps this motor simpler than the electric-start versions of the same 15 HP block, with no starter motor or battery wiring to maintain. Tiller steering puts throttle and gear shift in the handle, suiting small boats where the operator sits at the back rather than a forward console.
Before ordering
Measure your transom against this 15-inch short shaft; Mercury also sells this same engine with a longer shaft, and getting the length wrong affects how the propeller sits in the water and how well it cools. Fuel injection on this model is meant to give steadier starting than a comparable carbureted engine, even without electric start.
Starting technique on a pull-cord outboard
A smooth, full pull tends to start a cold engine more reliably than several short, hesitant tugs, and most manual-start outboards like this one also have a choke or primer step for a cold engine that is worth learning before the first trip rather than during it.
Common questions
Does it have electric start? No, this version is pull-cord manual start.
What comes with it? The usual starter equipment for this 15 HP line: propeller, fuel tank, lanyard, and paperwork, backed by Mercury's new-engine coverage.
