Details & Inspection Notes

This used Mercury 150CXL FourStroke is a 150 HP, inline four-cylinder outboard with a 25-inch shaft, electric start, and counter-rotation available, built around a 3.0-liter, SOHC powerhead. It suits twin-engine setups where one motor needs to spin the opposite direction from a standard prop, as well as single-engine boats built for this shaft length.

Engine and handling

Full throttle tops out around 5800 RPM, with a 1.92:1 gearcase and power-operated trim and tilt (22 degrees of trim, 73 of tilt). The belt-driven alternator is rated at 60 amps, 756 watts. Steering is remote, with mechanical, hydraulic, or electro-hydraulic options depending on how the controls are set up, and electronic fuel injection feeds the engine through a SmartCraft-managed ignition module built around a wet-sump lubrication system.

Coverage and condition

Coverage on this engine totals five years: a three-year standard Mercury warranty, topped with a two-year Product Protection Gold plan. Since this is a used motor, ask about hours, service records, and lower-unit condition before buying, and confirm the counter-rotation gearcase is what your twin-engine setup actually needs.

Is the propeller included? Check with the seller; counter-rotation units need a matching prop, and that is not always bundled with a used motor.

Can this run as a single engine? Yes, counter rotation only matters for multi-engine setups; it runs fine alone too.

Startup & Installation Checklist

  • Inspect all external gaskets, seals, spark plugs and timing components prior to installation.
  • Refill engine oil, transmission gear oil and coolant to manufacturer-specified capacities before initial cranking.
  • Prime the lubrication system and verify ECU wiring pinouts, sensors, and ground connections.
  • Startup warranty covers internal lubricated components, cylinder heads, and engine block for 30 days from delivery.
