Hughes Performance Street and Strip Transmissions 74-1

The only four-speed unit in this part of Hughes' street and strip lineup, the 74-1 is a remanufactured automatic on a Chevy bellhousing pattern, rated to 500 horsepower with lockup torque converter compatibility and a 3.06 first gear ratio.

What the extra gear and lockup add

A fourth gear gives this transmission an overdrive ratio for highway cruising that a 3-speed automatic does not have, and lockup compatibility lets a matched torque converter eliminate slip at cruising speed to cut heat and improve fuel economy. Both features point this unit toward street driving more than pure strip use, even while it still carries the street and strip name. The 3.06 first gear ratio still gives a strong step off the line despite that highway-friendly overdrive.

Fitment and what is not included

This case runs on a 30-spline input shaft, with a steel pan in the stock style and a chrome finish, built around a Chevy bellhousing pattern, so double-check your crossmember and driveshaft length before assuming a swap from a different Hughes case will be direct. A torque converter, flexplate, controller, wiring harness, and cooler are not part of this package, and a lockup-capable converter specifically is needed to use that feature.

Does lockup compatible mean it needs a special torque converter? Yes; using the lockup feature requires a torque converter built with a lockup clutch, matched to this case.
