Details & Inspection Notes

FTI's Level 2 build of the 700R4 (4L60), part number FT7R4-2H, targets up to 450 horsepower for a modified street machine, hot rod, or restomod, built to correct the stock transmission's known weak points rather than being a basic rebuild. Each unit is dyno-tested before it ships.

What FTI changed inside

A billet 300M input shaft replaces the stock piece that is prone to spline twisting, and a billet 300M fourth-gear servo addresses the walkout failure some stock units see in high-horsepower use. A Beast sunshell, described as the strongest aftermarket option available, backs up the stock part's known failure point, and high-energy wide clutch packs add torque capacity and heat dissipation in the 3-4 clutches. A performance Corvette-style second-gear servo firms up the 1-2 and 3-2 shifts, and a heavy-duty roller clutch strengthens reverse and manual second gear, with a high-capacity deep-dip pan often included for extra fluid volume.

Setting it up correctly

Gearing runs 3.06 first, 1.63 second, 1.00 third, and a 0.70 overdrive fourth, with 2.29 reverse, rated up to 450 lb-ft of torque; a torque converter is not included, and FTI recommends pairing it with one in the 2,400-2,800 rpm stall range. A large external transmission cooler is required, and correctly adjusting the TV cable is the most frequent cause of early failure if skipped.

Q: Is a core required? Yes, a refundable core charge typically applies and your old rebuildable 700R4 is expected back.

FTI describes the warranty on this build as typically running 12 to 24 months on defects in materials and workmanship, conditioned on professional installation and a documented external cooler.
