Details & Inspection Notes

This used Evinrude E60DPJL is a 60-hp jet-drive outboard, a three-cylinder E-TEC engine fitted with a jet pump instead of a propeller and lower unit, built to run through shallow or obstruction-heavy water.

How the jet drive works

In place of a prop, a two-position lift gate provides forward and reverse thrust, keeping the drive sealed against rocks and debris. Total displacement is 79 cubic inches, and the primary gear set runs 1:1, a ratio typical for a jet application rather than a conventional lower unit. Full throttle lands at 5,000-5,500 rpm, and the fuel system runs E-TEC direct injection with a stratified low-rpm mode.

Rigging and weight

Steering is remote, with a tiller accessory available, starting is electric, and a Trac-1 unit takes care of trim duties. This unit weighs 335 lbs on its 20-inch shaft, heavier than a prop-driven engine of similar output because of the added jet hardware bolted to the back of the gearcase.

What to expect from a jet model

Jet drives spin faster than a comparable prop-driven motor to produce similar thrust, so handling, sound, and acceleration feel noticeably different from a standard gearcase outboard of similar horsepower.

Does it have a propeller? No, it runs a jet pump in place of a prop and lower unit.

How much does it weigh? 335 lbs.
