This used Evinrude 40 HP runs E-TEC direct injection through a jet pump rather than a propeller, part of the same jet series Evinrude also built in 60 and 105 HP sizes. Bore is 3.62 in, stroke 2.60 in, for 53 cubic inches of displacement, at a 1:1 primary gear ratio.

Why a jet drive

Without a blade below the hull, this motor can run water a propeller outboard would ground in, from sandbars to shallow backcountry rivers. A two-position lift gate handles forward and reverse, and the direct-injection design keeps the exhaust quiet while running at the shallower depth a jet setup sits at.

What to check before buying

Make sure the boat and mount suit a jet lower unit rather than a standard gearcase and propeller, since the two aren't interchangeable. Shaft length is 20 inches, so check that against transom height, and the motor's 247-pound weight should factor into bracket or trailer choice.

Controls and electrical

Steering can be remote or, with the tiller accessory, by hand, and starting is electric. The alternator delivers 81 amps total with 25 amps reserved net, and trim is powered rather than manual.
