Details & Inspection Notes

Edelbrock's 22765 Max-Fire distributor is a ready-to-run unit for AMC and Jeep 290-401 V8 engines, built to replace a points-triggered distributor without needing a separate external ignition control box.

How it installs

Wiring is a simple three-wire hookup, which keeps the swap straightforward compared with a points conversion or an add-on ignition module. Inside, a centerless-ground shaft rides on a sealed upper roller bearing, with a lower bronze Oil-Lite bushing running unusually long to steady the far end, and the housing comes from 6061-T6 aluminum, CNC machined with O-ring grooves cut in for sealing against the engine block.

Trigger and ignition details

A high-output magnetic pickup paired with a large paddle-wheel reluctor is built to hold a strong trigger signal even at high rpm. Edelbrock recommends pairing this distributor with a Max-Fire coil to get the full voltage output the design is capable of. The cap and rotor are molded from a 30 percent glass-filled polyester for durability, with brass contacts and a stainless rotor spring, and mechanical and vacuum advance are both fully adjustable for dialing in mileage versus response.

What's included

The distributor ships with its cap, rotor, retainer and a mechanical advance curve kit, so the parts needed to set initial and total timing are in the box rather than a separate purchase.

Startup & Installation Checklist

  • Inspect all external gaskets, seals, spark plugs and timing components prior to installation.
  • Refill engine oil, transmission gear oil and coolant to manufacturer-specified capacities before initial cranking.
  • Prime the lubrication system and verify ECU wiring pinouts, sensors, and ground connections.
  • Startup warranty covers internal lubricated components, cylinder heads, and engine block for 30 days from delivery.
